Gymkhana Grid
The inaugural Gymkhana Grid & Ken Block Invitational took place at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday December 4th from 10am-9pm as thousands of spectators flocked from all over the West Coast to witness what they had only seen before on Youtube. This time however, Ken was joined by top drifters and road racers from all over the world, including Team Baskoeten Racing from the Netherlands and Team Drift Speed from Japan.
The day opened with practice for the two classes: RWD and AWD. Meanwhile, the first ever Motor Mavens Mass Appeal car show took place in the paddock area with hundreds of cars on display along with a large vendor midway. The Official Gymkhana Grid Model Lounge, powered by TunerPlayground was also in full effect featuring ten gorgeous Southern California import models. Additional eye candy was provided by Monster Energy Drink and Castrol EDGE (along with free ice-cold drinks and schwag). And of course we can't forget about the Official Gymkhana Grid Girls: Alexia Cortez & Alicia Whitten who spent the entire day dazzling fans.
Late into the afternoon the Top 16 drivers were chosen and were poised to compete head-to-head following a fantastic opening ceremony with the singing of the national anthem. The final two hours were both breathtaking and nerve-wracking as the action on track kept every spectator on their toes watching anxiously to see who could "top the Block." In the end Tanner Foust, driver of the Rockstar Fiesta would prove to be successful in taking the AWD win, while Daijiro Yoshihara in the Falken/Discount Tires S13 took 1st Place in RWD.
