Moto GP 2009: Laguna Seca Raceway
The RedBull US Grand Prix was held once again at Laguna Seca Raceway from July 3rd through the 5th. The rolling hills of Monterey provided the perfect backdrop for the weekend's two-wheeled racing action.
During the last few minutes of Saturday's qualifying session, Jorge Lorenzo took a crazy high-side crash resulting in a dislocated shoulder and baking a toe, but taking the Pole Position with a 1 min 21.678. Valentino Rossi was trying to repeat his 2008 victory at Laguna Seca qualifying in the 2nd position with a 1 min. 21.845 lap time. Australian Casey Stoner qualified 3rd with a 1 min. 21.910, and Dani Pedrosa qualifying 4th with a 1 min 22.113.
Sunday's race was action packed, off the starting line, Dani Pedrosa had a rocket start from the 4th position on the grid jumping ahead of everyone to grab the lead. Most of the action was between Rossi, Stoner, Lorenzo, battling for the 2nd and 3rd positions, and at the same time trying to catch up to Pedrosa. In the past few laps, Dani Pedrosa pace started to slow, and Valentino Rossi was right on him in the last lap, but Pedrosa managed to hold him off for the 1st place victory.
It was the first GP race victory for Pedrosa's Repsol Honda Team in over a year. Rossi and his Yamaha took 2nd place, and Lorenzo amazingly pulled off a 3rd place finish despite being injured during Saturdays qualifying crash. Casey Stoner Placed 4th, and the American favorite Nicky Hayden and his Ducati managed a 5th place finish, his best of the year.
